A Message From the President
Fellow alumni and distinguished guests,
It is an immense honor and privilege to be your president for the next two years. Serving on the board has been incredibly rewarding, and I couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated and talented team to lead this remarkable organization. I’m truly grateful for their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to our alumni community here in Illinois.
A warm welcome to our newest board members, Leslie, May, and Ana!
Thirty-seven years ago, I achieved my dream of studying BA Economics at UP Diliman. Like many of you, I poured my heart and soul into my studies, burning the midnight oil to secure a successful future. During my third year, the introduction of Business Economics and the Socialized Tuition Fee Assistance Program (STFAP) marked a significant turning point. STFAP was a revolutionary initiative that made UP education more accessible to students from diverse backgrounds. I was fortunate enough to benefit from this program, which undoubtedly eased the financial burden on my family, who were supporting three college students at the time.
While STFAP, or its successor, continues to exist, the struggle persists. Many students still face financial challenges that hinder their academic pursuits. That’s why we’re dedicated to raising funds for our UP Financial Assistance Fund. A modest contribution of $25 per month, or $300 per year, can provide essential support for a student’s living expenses for three months. Your generosity in this endeavor will directly impact the lives of aspiring young minds.
In our recent membership meeting, you expressed two key desires: increased visibility and stronger partnerships for fundraising, as well as a greater commitment to giving back to our local communities. We’ve heard your call, and the board and I will prioritize these goals in our upcoming planning meeting in January.
I firmly believe that the strength of our alumni association lies in our collective power. I encourage each of you to actively engage, share your ideas, and contribute your time and talents to building a vibrant and supportive community.
Together, let us continue to elevate the legacy of UP and ensure its enduring success for generations to come.
Thank you once again for this incredible honor. I am very excited to start my term.
Theresa “Isah” Aclo-Abecia
